David and Rod's poster based on the early aboriginal settlers name for Vancouver and more specifically, the lower Fraser delta - S’ólh Téméxw.

"Our poster attempts to create a tension between the historical tribal context of the name and modern realities, both typographically and in the image composition itself," says David.

Like many other cities, Vancouver’s diverse, multicultural background has given way to the creation of several alternate names. Bestowed by both residents and visitors, these nicknames suggest the multitude of histories that collectively define Vancouver.

By Any Other Name is comprised of works by seven Vancouver-based graphic designers, all graduates of Emily Carr University who occupy an important role in shaping Vancouver’s visual culture.

The show was conceived and curated by Working Format Design & Typography together with the Emily Carr Alumni Association. The physical posters are on display in the Canada Lines’ Waterfront Station starting from October 2011.
